Kochetkov Institute of Physics and Power Engineering, Obninsk, USSR ABSTRACT A brief description of the state-of-the-art in develop­ ment of fast sodium-cooled reactors in the USSR is presented in the paper. Their place in the future atomic power engineer­ ing, prospects and problems of future sodium reactors of the nearest generation are discussed. 1. The basis of the atomic power engineering in the USSR of the first period will be thermal reactors. In this period it is assumed to obtain an industrial experience of the BN-350 and BN-600 fast reactors operation, to design a reference pro­ totype of a high-power fast reactor (~1500 Mff(e)) which in fu­ ture could be a serial one together with promising thermal reactors.

4. BN-600* This reactor represents the next step along the way to a commercial plant. As compared to the BN-350 it has a higher power, higher steam conditions which allowed to use standard equipment for the machine room with the K-200-130 turbine of 200 MWle); the integral-type arrangement of the BN-600 primary circuit, the once-through-type module steam ge­ nerator seem to be more progressive solutions. At present, construction work on the BN-600 complex is practically completed, the rate of mounting work is increasing.
